Mitrionics Demonstrates Accelerated Smith-Waterman Algorithm on Convey's HC-1(TM) Hybrid Core Computer at SC09

Innovative Platform Features High Performance, Energy Efficiency, and Reconfigurable Personalities

PORTLAND, OR -- (Marketwire) -- 11/16/09 -- SUPERCOMPUTING 2009, SC09 Booth #1006 -- Mitrionics, Inc., the technology leader in FPGA-based hybrid computing software, today announced a partnership agreement with Convey Computer(TM) Corporation, a pioneer in hybrid-core computing systems, regarding its Mitrion(TM) Accelerated Computing Platform and the Convey HC-1 server.

Mitrionics will support its Mitrion Virtual Processor(TM) and Mitrion Software Development Kit(TM) on Convey's HC-1(TM) hybrid-core computers, and will demonstrate a Mitrion-accelerated Smith-Waterman algorithm running on the HC-1 in the Mitrionics booth # 1006 at SC09. The Smith-Waterman algorithm is well known in life sciences for performing local sequence alignment between two nucleotide or protein sequences.

FPGA computing applications, championed by both Mitrionics and Convey, are attractive to HPC users because of the technology's lower power consumption, architectural flexibility, and increased application performance.

"By supporting Mitrionics' products on our hybrid-core computing systems, customers will be able to develop and deploy custom personalities in a shorter time period," said Bruce Toal, CEO and president, Convey Computer Corporation. "We are enthusiastic about working with Mitrionics, a company with extensive FPGA engineering expertise and a recognized technology leader in accelerating applications in bioinformatics, information retrieval, and government/defense."

"Convey has clearly set new industry standards for hybrid-core computing systems in terms of innovative architecture, performance, programmability, and power savings," said Magnus Hjern, president and CEO of Mitrionics, Inc. "Mitrionics is very excited to have Convey as a partner, as our combined products complement each other technologically and provide a unique added value to customers. With both companies' focus on accelerating applications through hybrid-core computing solutions, our strong mutual interests and expertise provide an excellent foundation for a successful long-term business relationship." Programmable "on the fly," yet still close enough to raw semiconductor gates, FPGAs represent an ideal way to achieve application-specific performance without the time and cost of developing a custom ASIC. Mitrionics will resell the Convey HC-1 hybrid-core computing system bundled with its Mitrion Software Acceleration Platform beginning December 1, 2009.

About the Convey HC-1

The Convey HC-1 integrates advanced, patent-pending computer architecture and compiler technology with commercial, off-the-shelf hardware -- namely an Intel® Xeon® processor and Xilinx® Field Programmable Gate Arrays. The HC-1 features a Convey-engineered coprocessor with its own high-bandwidth, virtual memory addressed, cache-coherent memory subsystem in a scalable 2U chassis. Moreover, an ANSI standard development environment gives programmers 100 percent productivity and portability -- an attribute unique to Convey.

Mitrion SDK 2.0 - Accelerated Computing Platform

The Mitrion SDK is a complete development environment for accelerating applications while making it easy for programmers to learn how to write software using parallel programming techniques that take advantage of the parallel processing capabilities of the Mitrion Virtual Processor. The SDK includes the Mitrion-C parallel programming language, a compiler, and graphical code-simulator that identifies programming errors, performance bottlenecks, and inefficient code. Mitrionics offers a free SDK Personal Edition that supports Linux/UNIX, Windows and Mac OS X which can be downloaded from:

About Convey Computer Corporation

Based in Richardson, Texas, Convey Computer breaks power, performance and programmability barriers with the world's first hybrid-core computer -- a system that marries the low cost and simple programming model of a commodity system with the performance of a customized hardware architecture. Convey brings decades of experience and intellectual assets to performance problem-solving. Its executive and design teams all come from successful backgrounds of building computer companies, most notably Convex Computer Corporation and Hewlett-Packard. More information can be found at:
